In the digital age, visually appealing drink photography has become essential for brands, influencers, and restaurants to stand out in a crowded market. Stunning images of cocktails and drinks can evoke emotions, tell a story, and entice viewers to engage, share, and ultimately, indulge. A well-captured drink photo can transform a simple beverage into a work of art, sparking desire and driving both online and offline interactions.
In this article, we’ll explore the art behind drink photography, learn how it can elevate food and beverage brands, give you a glimpse into what happens before and during a professional drink photoshoot, and share some of the tricks our stylists use to make our drink photoshoots come to life.
What Is Drink Photography?
Drink photography is a specialized genre within food photography that focuses on showcasing the visual appeal of a beverage with the aim of making the viewer feel the thirst-quenching allure of its color, texture, and sparkle. From cocktails and mocktails to coffees and smoothies, beverage photography has the power to evoke a sensory experience and drive engagement – particularly in marketing and social media contexts.

How Can a Drink Photographer Elevate Your Brand?
Irresistible, luxurious, mouth-watering … these are some of the words associated with modern cocktail photography and professionally-produced images that result from a drinks photoshoot. These stunning visual assets are key to highlighting the unique qualities and appeal of your product, creating a cohesive and attractive brand identity, and fostering brand recognition and loyalty.
The effective photography of drinks requires a keen eye for styling and a technically-skilled beverage photographer. It demands precise control of lighting and composition to capture the transparency, reflections, and subtle details of a beverage – its essence! With a comprehensive portfolio at your fingertips, you can deploy high-powered drink photos across a variety of marketing channels, from social media and print ads to menu design and billboards.
What Happens on a Professional Drink Photoshoot?

A professional drink photoshoot is a meticulously planned and executed process that aims to capture the perfect beverage and cocktail images, showcasing their allure and enticing qualities. Each aspect of the shoot is orchestrated to the smallest technical detail to ensure that the final photos are not only exquisite, but also convey your desired message and reinforce your brand narrative.
1. Pre-Shoot Setup
Where the photoshoot will take place as well as the prop and ingredient selection is decided during the pre-production stage of the project.
On-location shoots may involve the incorporation of restaurant and/or bar photography – great for bolstering brand identity and recognition! Photoshoots that take place on set allow for custom-designed and styled scenes and vignettes that wholly satisfy the brief and enable maximum flexibility.
Our stylists work closely with the art director to choose appropriate glassware, garnishes, and backdrops that complement the drinks, align with your brand, and tell the campaign story.
2. Styling the Scene
Shoot day: our favorite day! Our creative team is abuzz with energy and excitement as we prepare for the main event.
We’ll adjust and fine-tune the lighting to create the perfect ambiance, highlighting each drink’s colors and textures. Our stylists will finesse the background and finalize the positioning of the surface arrangement, ensuring all elements complement the product and add visual interest.
Once the drink is prepared and mixed, we’ll carefully consider the composition to ensure it looks vibrant, fresh, and desirable. Does the glassware best showcase the drink? Are the garnishes and decorative elements enhancing its appeal? Does the drink look refreshing and intensely appealing? (Lots more on what we look for and how we achieve it below!)
3. Getting the Perfect Shot
When the shoot begins, you may see the photographer change cameras or switch lenses in order to capture detailed, high-quality images. We’ll experiment with various angles and perspectives to obtain the most flattering and dynamic shots. As needed, we’ll make on-the-spot adjustments to the drink, props, or lighting to perfect each shot.

How to Make Your Cocktail, Drink, or Beverage Sparkle
So, how do you make a drink leap off the page or screen, transforming from meh to magnificent? An experienced hand and a whole lot of nuance! Our stylists have a number of tricks up their sleeves. Here are some that we frequently use while working with our client’s chef or mixologist – a fun and important collaboration.
1. Keep It “Cold”
Lightly misting the surface of the drink or the glass can create the illusion of condensation and freshness.
2. Use Fresh Ingredients
Herbs, fruits, and other garnishes not only add color but also look more vibrant and appealing in photos. Our stylists make sure ingredients look fresh and crisp; that succulent elements look juicy and lush.
3. Be Picky About Glassware
As mentioned, glassware must complement the drink, enhancing its colors and presentation. Sometimes the choice of vessel is the stylists’ choice, other times it’s mandated by the client.
Of course, glassware must be spotless and polished to avoid smudges and fingerprints.
4. Perfect the “Ice”
Real ice doesn’t stand a chance under studio lighting! To keep beverages looking fresh and frosty, we use synthetic ice alternatives. Strategically choose the shape of the “ice” to suit the beverage – most times that means cubes, pebbles or balls, but sometimes unique shapes can add on-brand visual interest.
5. Enhance the Fizz
Just before shooting, we may sprinkle a little salt over the top of the drink to reactivate the carbonation. Using a straw or skewer to gently stir can also revive bubbles that start to fade.
6. Get Creative with Garnish
The strategic placement of garnishes creates visually-interesting contrasts and depth, guiding the viewer’s eye and enhances the drink’s draw. Sometimes we decorate the rim of the glass with sugar, salt, or colorful sprinkles for added texture and color.
